Halo
2026, Oil on Belgian linen, 92 x 92cm
Halo presents as a contradiction between innocence and culpability, inviting viewers to question the stories they instinctively construct. A woman moves with urgency from a grass fire, her haste suggesting escape and survival. Yet the match held casually in her mouth introduces an unsettling possibility that she may have ignited the blaze herself. This subtle detail transforms the work from a simple depiction of flight into a meditation on responsibility, consequence and the complexity of human nature. The halo, formed as part of her hat, evokes traditional religious iconography, signifying purity, virtue and divine grace. Here, however, it sits in direct tension with the suggestion of arson, creating a deliberate juxtaposition between sanctity and transgression. Rather than resolving this contradiction, the painting embraces ambiguity, challenging viewers to consider how easily appearances shape moral judgement and how goodness and guilt can coexist within the same individual.
